Haldol Uses Haldol is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in your brain.
Haldol is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions, including hallucinations, delusions, and confusion. It it is also used to treat Tourette's disorder, as well as behavioral and hyperactive conditions in children. How to Use Haldol Take Haldol exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you. Haldol Side Effects This drug may cause following serious side effects : an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing closing of your throat swelling of your lips, tongue, or face or hives), uncontrollable movements of the mouth, tongue, cheeks, jaw, arms or legs, yellowing of your skin or eyes. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Haldol and talk to your doctor if you experience dizziness or drowsiness, headache, weakness or tremor (shaking), agitation, an increased heart rate, constipation, dry mouth, or weight gain. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual. Haldol Precautions Tell your doctor your medical history, including:liver disease or other problems with your liver, kidney disease, heart disease or other heart problems such as high blood pressure, a history of a heart attack, or irregular heartbeats, seizures or epilepsy, an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, or glaucoma.
It Should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Caution is advised when this product is used in the elderly since this group may be more sensitive to side effects.
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Haldol may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. Dizziness may be more likely to occur when you rise from a sitting or lying position. Rise slowly to prevent dizziness and a possible fall. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Haldol. Avoid becoming overheated during Haldol therapy. It is easier to become dangerously dehydrated while you are taking Haldol. Use caution in hot weather and during exercise. Call your doctor if you lose a significant amount of body fluid as a result of sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting.
Haldol Drug Interactions Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you are using, especially :a barbiturate such as phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton), pentobarbital (Nembutal), amobarbital (Amytal), or secobarbital (Seconal), carbamazepine (Tegretol), fluoxetine (Prozac), lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, others), methyldopa (Aldomet), phenytoin (Dilantin), guanethidine (Ismelin), or a tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), and others. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Haldol. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines. Haldol Overdose If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, weakness, decreased coordination, giddiness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, and seizure. Haldol Notes Do not share Haldol with others.
Haldol Missed Dose If you miss an Haldol dosage, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Haldol Storage Store Haldol at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture.
