Reteovir Uses Retrovir is an antiviral medication. It is in a category of HIV medicines called reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Retrovir inhibits the reproduction of HIV in the body. Retrovir is used to treat the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Retrovir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. How to use Reteovir Take Reteovir exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. You can take Reteovir with or without food. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you. Reteovir Side Effects This drug may cause following serious side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives), seizures, rapid, uncontrollable eye movements, decreased coordination, or numbness, tingling, or pain in the hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy). Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue taking Retrovir and talk to your doctor if you experience mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite, headache, insomnia, a rash, or redistribution of body fat (loss of fat from the arms, legs, and face and increased fat around the neck, breast, and trunk). Reteovir Precautions Tell your doctor your medical history especially of : If you had a kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, or bone marrow suppression. Reteovir should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Follow your doctor's instructions with respect to high-risk activities such as unprotected sex and the sharing of needles. Retrovir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS, and you can still transmit the virus to others during therapy with this medication. Avoid alcohol while taking Retrovir. Alcohol may increase the risk of damage to the liver and/ or pancreas. Reteovir Drug Interactions Retrovir may interact with other medications resulting in reduced effectiveness and/ or side effects. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products. Reteovir Overdose If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, lethargy, confusion, and seizures. No deaths have been reported from Retrovir overdose. Reteovir Notes Do not share this medication with others. Reteovir Missed Dose If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered, do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Reteovir Storage Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
